Written by Vygantas Lipskas on August 28, 2007

Web BrowsersYes, the world is moving fast, don’t you think so? It’s about time for you to learn some tricks and do everything much faster (if not already doing so). So to begin my first post from “Tips” section I will list 5 web browsers features which helps me to save a lot of time every day. If you are not already using them, I hope that this post will help you to save some time as well as helps me. So here we go. 5 web browsers features to save your time (listed alphabetically).

Mouse Gestures.
Great thing to save your time. Don’t just move your mouse to click back button, thats why you have mouse gestures for.

Search Engines Management (not for search engines only).
Isn’t that annoying when you have to open a web page and only then type what you are looking for? It is. But there’s a solution. When I want to search for something, I don’t visit Google, Yahoo, Wikipedia, eBay and other sites home pages anymore. Just pick a character, select your web page and that’s all. I prefer Opera’s Search Engines Management, easy to add your own stuff in a few seconds just by clicking “Add” button.

Opera's Search Engines Management

Download Firefox 2.0.0.6 with Search Engines Management.
Download Search Engines Management add-on for Internet Explorer (IE7Pro)
Netscape and other Firefox based browsers supports this too.

Sessions.
Don’t you just get bored when you have to open your previously visited web pages? Now why you have to do that? Forget it. Web browsers developers thought about you.

Firefox Sessions

Opera's Sessions

Download Opera 9.23 with Sessions.
Download Firefox 2.0.0.6 with Sessions.
Download Sessions add-on for Internet Explorer (IE7Pro)
Netscape and other Firefox based browsers supports this too.

Snap Links (Firefox add-on) by Pedro Fonseca.
This is probably one of the best things I ever seen. This little add-on helps you to open multiple links at same time. Just mark them using right mouse click and that’s all. Every marked link will open in a new tab. I love this little add-on.

Snap Links

Speed Dial.
This feature allows you to open your favorite sites just in one click. No need to use bookmarks, no need to type a few symbols in the address bar in order to see your favorite sites addresses. Just one click and you are here, surfing your favorite site already.

    Where’s 5? I suggest Mouse Gestures.

Fixed. I thought I’ve wrote 5, sorry about that. Added mouse gestures.

opera doesn’t have the snap links thing, but you can still open more than one link at once. Use the links panel, or the links manager (ctrl+j). From there, you can select multiple links and open them all at once - also very practical for downloading many files in one go (using “quick download” - automatically puts everything to the specified download directory)

This is definitely the most useless thing I’ve ever seen. Why don’t you middle click instead of right-click ?
Or if you want to have the hassle of mark the links before, open the links panel: Ctrl+J.

I use middle click for scrolling. It’s must faster to use FF + mouse right click instead of CTRL+J (for me).

Opera actually has something that I think is better than the snap links thing. I just middle click on the link. It opens the page in a tab in the background.

I don’t know if it’s the default action, but it’s easy to set up. Go to Tools->Preferences->Advanced and click the “Middle click options…” button. Select “Open in background tab”. Or “Open in new tab” if you’d rather the new tab get focus.

Right-click any search edit field on a webpage and select “Create search” in Opera to have the search created automatically for you.

Okay, so a lot of people have noted Opera’s links features in comparison to Snap Links… But you might also note that it was available as far back as Opera 5: I used to hit J then to get a list of links.

Opera’s implementation of Snap Links is really good… just hold Ctrl+Shift and then click all the links you want on the web page and they’ll be opened in the background. Optionally, right-click on a link and drag the mouse down then up. That also opens pages in a background tab.

Strangely you don’t mention that all of this features [except link snap] is available in IE with plugins as IE7Pro.

I never tried IE7 Pro :-) But going to fix this post then.

It’s recommended, makes IE7 a far better and more competetive browser
