Salwar Kameez

Salwar kameez are traditional clothes popular in both India and Pakistan. Shalwar Kameez are a unisex item which may be worn by either sex. However, outside of India / Pakistan they are predominantly worn by women. Certainly, in western countries it is far less common to see men wearing Salwar, with Shalwar suits being very popular with women of indian decent. Shalwar are a form of trouser which are lightweight and comfortable. Salwar are loose fitting being wide at the top and narrower at the bottom. A Kameez is the long shirt which is commonly worn over the top to complete the outfit. Quameez are often elaborate with detailed embroidery often using gold or silver thread. Beading and sequens are often added to complete the effect. Many Kameez have a low neck like, and as such are easily worn with Jewellery. Salwar Kameez are decent affordable garments which are far more convenient and easy to wear than either a Saree or Lengha.

In the west the garment has been transformed from the traditionally plain practical atire into something far more elaborate, and as such are now worn more as a fashion statement than anything else. This is particularly true for younger people, who tend to wear Shalwar Kameez at family and social gatherings, whilst choosing western cloaths for everyday work. Shalwar Quameez therefore make both practical every day items as well as fun flamboyant party wear.
