With a new year come new insights, new horizons and new adventures. And in that light I decided to watch 2009’s first episode of Brothers & Sisters, a show that I actually chewed my own foot off to escape covering last year, because the prospect of bleeding to death or choking on my own hot blood was far preferable to suffering week after week of the self-obsessed Walker militia.

We catch up with the Walkers following Kevin’s liver donation … which is in itself rather hilarious - how on earth is Lizzie going to live past twelve if she’s handicapped with the boozefilter of a 40-year-old? She won’t make it through a single Walker Sunday dinner!

Anyway, new husband Scotty and mama Nora are vying for the Florence Nightingale award and totally getting in each other’s way, and even the painkillers aren’t enough to get Kevin through it so he escapes the mothership with the help of Justin. Plus, he’s having these weirdo fever dreams about fatherhood, mostly because of the fact that he now knows that he’s Lizzie’s biodad and all that. 

The dreams range from the surreal (Kevin with a pregnant belly) to the hilarious (Scotty dressed as a French soldier trying to force-feed him red wine) to the yawn (Kevin offering to buy a teary grown-up Lizzie ice cream) to the downright horrifying (Kevin getting hot and heavy with Julia, which leads to a rather awkward bedside chat when he awakens to find her watching him sleep), but for the most part they provide the episode exactly what the show has always lacked for me: humor that isn’t rooted in how awful these people are to one another. 

Of course, the episode had plenty of that as well, with Nora treating Saul’s old friend Roger like a tool even though she was the one who came on to him at a luau 30 years ago (a fact that she only admits while hiding in the pantry drinking wine, natch) and Justin being called a loser by Sarah’s first-grader and the entire family using it as an excuse to stage an “intervention” with the poor guy. 

But more than anything I’m really impressed with how far the show has evolved in terms of its gay characters and relationships. Honestly when I last actually watched the show, Kevin was a fairly irredeemable asshole of a character who was dating a closeted actor and Scotty was a needy, pathetic mess. Not exactly must-see TV, in my book.

Now Kevin is a slightly more redeemable asshole, Scotty has his stuff together and isn’t afraid to stand up to his mother-in-law or confront his husband about his lousy behavior (I loved the “what part of ‘in sickness and in health’?” line) and we’ve also got Saul, who seems to be handling his coming out quite well and is a ray of sunshine into the life of his sister. The integration of the gay characters into the various storylines is infinitely more relaxed and satisfying. Even Kevin’s signoff gag about Lizzie possibly growing up to like girls didn’t feel out-of-place.

In all, I didn’t hate the episode and I didn’t hate myself for watching it, which is a big leap in terms of quality of experience from the last time I tuned in.

Of course, our resident recapper Steven Frank will have the full monty for you tomorrow in his mainpage recap. And I gather that die-hard fans of the show might have different feelings about this particular episode.

In the episode called “Sibling Rivalry”, ABC primetime drama “Brothers & Sisters” will present a guest starring role by talk hosts Regis Philbin and Kelly Ripa. The episode where they are in, will be aired on Sunday, January 11 at 10/9c.

Kitty goes public with her tell-all book on an appearance on “Live with Regis & Kelly”, but suspects that Robert is keeping a very big secret. Meanwhile, Sarah runs into some serious financial trouble that could keep Greenatopia from making it off the ground, and Tommy allies with Saul to push Holly out of the family business.

“Brothers & Sisters” has received two nominations at the 2009 Golden Globes. Sally Field is running for Best Performance by an Artist in TV Series while Rachel Griffiths receives a nomination for Supporting Actress.

Brothers and Sisters Season 3 Episode 11 is entitled ‘A Father Dreams‘. In this episode (s03e11), Kevin and Tommy had a confrontation caused by Elizabeth’s illness. This confrontation could affect their relationship as brothers. Meanwhile, Saul introduces again his high school crush to Nora and Kitty is preparing for her book’s upcoming promo tour by having mock interviews with Robert’s employees. We would be able to watch Brothers and Sisters s03e11 ‘A Father Dreams’ on January 4, 2008 since the series is having a Christmas break. ABC just released pics from episode 3.10 titled “Just a Sliver”. This is the Thanksgiving episode that unfortunately airs  the Sunday after Thanksgiving. Oops!

As you can see from the above pic, the Walkers do gather for the holiday, but it’s not at the Walker manse or a fine restaurant. To find out where they are dining and more importantly why, click through through the jump. But be warned! It’s a little spoilery!

My interpretation of the pic below is that Tommy, unhappy he hadn’t scored a knock-out of Kevin during their fight at Justin’s Narcotics Anonymous meeting, ambushed him late one night and is now visiting Kevin at the hospital to gloat!

Tommy:
So you didn’t get a look at who did this to you, huh? Gosh, that’s awful!

Okay, that’s not really what’s going on here. According to ABC publicity about the episode: The Walkers encounter some scheduling conflicts on Thanksgiving,leaving Nora and Sarah to celebrate alone, until Elizabeth endures amedical emergency that brings the family together.

Gee, guess who turns out to be Elizabeth’s biological father? I’d say it’s Kevin unless Scotty finally got fed up with Kevin’s self-centeredness and walloped him with one of his Le Creuset frying pans and that’s why he’s laid up. Boy, if Kevin is Elizabeth’s biological parent, Scotty’s mom is going to be so pissed that those homosexual genes are getting spread around!

Balthazar Getty: Yes, yes, Matthew. I know the readers of AfterElton.com were hoping I’d end up in the hospital dying. Put a sock in it, already.

Tommy:
So you’re Elizabeth’s biological dad, Bro! Congrats on having such great swimmers! Justin is crushed to have been beaten by a gay guy!

Tommy, to self: Of course, I got beat by the gay guy, too. Am I really a man? And why are there animated leaves floating next to me?

Luke Macfarlane:
For the LAST time, Matthew — yes, you look WAY hotter in a hospital gown than Chad Allen did on General Hospital: Night Shift. Um, I’ve gotta go rehearse my line now.

Rachel Griffiths: General Hospital: Night Shift? No, I’ve never seen it, Matthew. Why?

Nora to Tommy: Why should I clean the bedpan just because I’m the mother? He’s in here for your plot contrivance, not mine!

Nora:
Julia? Why does that name sound familiar? Oh, Tommy’s wife! No, no, haven’t seen her this episode. Yes, given that Elizabeth is in the hospital that is a little odd.

Uncle Saul: Yes, Doctor Myles. We promise no yelling, fighting or thowing things. We only do that every fourth episode.

Nora:
Me? I’m thankful because Holly is on life support in intensive care. Let’s go see if we can pull the plug and watch her slowly suffocate!

Losing her dream house to Kevin Walker on the last episode of “Brothers & Sisters” does not make Nora Walker gives up. As revealed through recently-released “Unfinished Business” preview, Nora will try to recruit the family to de-construct her new charity money pit.

Episode 3.09 also revolves around Kitty and Robert McCallister who take a huge and overwhelming step forward in the adoption process. It also features Sarah Walker who takes a big risk and eats crow with her new business partners. Meanwhile, Holly Harper drives Tommy Walker to his limit when she offers Rebecca Harper a high level executive position at the winery without consulting him.

Guest starring Sonja Sohn as Trish Evans and Steven Weber as Graham Finch, “Unfinished Business” is scheduled to air two weeks from now on November 30 at 10/9c on ABC.

In the next episode of “Brothers & Sisters“, Justin Walker will be a matchmaker for Saul Holden. Entitled “Going Once Going Twice”, Justin who in the last episode had some trouble on his relationship with Rebecca Harper, will make a plan to give Saul an unexpected candidate to go for a date with.

The episode will revolve around the effort of Kevin Walker who tries hard to overcompensate for his recent pay cut to Scotty Wandell. The man, who just begins to realize the reality of politics, will take Nora Walker’s dream house away from her as a gift for Scotty.

Guest starring Dave Foley as Paul, the date of Saul, “Going Once Going Twice” is scheduled to premiere on ABC November 16 at 10/9c. Foley’s guest role on “Brothers & Sisters” marks his several credit appearances on some other show series like “Stargate: Atlantis” and “Scrubs“.

Previous episode of “Brothers & Sisters” featured Kitty and her husband Robert McCallister waiting for a birth mother. Next week in “Do You Believe in Magic?”, Kitty’s neurosis will cause McCallister’s chance to adopt to be in danger.

As the title states, the episode will have something to do with magic and all this stuff. Saul does some magic trick, while Rebecca, Sarah, Kitty and Nora visit a fortune teller who predicts that there is a big chaos about to happen. Kevin’s first day is an eyeopener to the reality of politics, and of respecting his new boss.

Magic spell also happens in Tommy and Julia’s wedding anniversary. In the other side, Justin and Rebecca need some magic spell for their romance which is being disturbed by some issues of their relationship. Tommy razzes Justin over Rebecca’s response to his three little words.
