Burn Notice

With so much new television being produced every fall, it’s always pleasant to find a great new show in the middle of the summer. Last year, USA introduced Psych, one of my favorite new shows in recent years and this year they did it again by airing Burn Notice. It’s not just the clever combination of witty in-jokes and action scenes that makes Burn Notice such a great show. The story is a just loose enough, the characters just flawed enough, and the setting perfect for a rogue intelligence agent and his oddball friends. With an exhilarating first season already completed, I’m only upset that I have to wait an entire year for the next 13 episodes.

Created by Matt Nix for USA Network, Burn Notice is about Michael Westen, a former intelligence agent for the US government finds out one day that he has been burned. A burn notice is a marker placed on an agent that denotes them as being unreliable or dangerous in some way. The only problem is that Westen doesn’t know why he was burned. Now, with his two black belts and mastery of nearly every weapon and electronic device on the planet, he must combat his former employers and find out exactly why he was burned. Along for the ride are his old, ex Navy Seal buddy, Sam Axe, playing the role of FBI double agent for Michael and Fiona Glenanne, Michael’s ex-girlfriend and problematic accomplice.

Westen is played by Jeffrey Donovan, a relative newcomer to television acting with a few guest starring roles to his credit. Fiona is played by Gabrielle Anwar, herself an old acting pro who is also relatively new to television with the exception of last spring’s The Tudors on Showtime. Of the principle cast, Bruce Campbell who plays Sam Axe, is easily the most experienced. Having made a career of appearing in cult classic films such as Evil Dead and Bubba Ho-Tep and television shows such as Xena Warrior Princess and Brisco County Jr., his new role as Sam Axe, the down and out former Seal, is perfectly suited to his smarmy, sarcastic style.

In the end, it is the characters that keep Burn Notice soaring so high as such a great show, as has long been the case with USA’s clever drama/comedies. As Robert Lloyd of the Los Angeles Times said, “The dialogue is always to the point, yet it gives even the bit players enough room to create something memorable.” The rest of the critics have been equally as receptive, giving the show all generally positive reviews. Linda Stasi of the New York Post called the show, “slick and funny and a lot of fun,” and Glenn Garvin of the Miami Herald calls it “Loveably silly.” The show took the critics by surprise and ran the gauntlet of summer time cable television. It has already been renewed for next summer and I’ll be the first person on the couch ready to watch it.

Memorable qoutes

Michael: Airbags save a lot of lives, but they also put you out long enough to get your hands cable-tied to the steering wheel

Fiona: Any thoughts on to why you're so unpopular? Why didn't they just kill ya?

Michael: I might be a lesson, a warning. Maybe somebody wants to offer me a job, but they want me desperate before they make the offer... It could be a lot of things. I don't know.

Fiona: That sounds like fun.

Michael: I'm glad you think so. I haven't worked so hard for so little money since Afghanistan. Afghanistan... (shudders) But at least there my mother wasn't calling me thirty times a day! Thank you for giving her my number!

Fiona: You're welcome.

Sugar: What's your problem?

Michael: My problem right now is a pretty boy drug dealer with a bad dye job is standing in my way.

Madeline: (Referring to Michael's father) The two of you were so much alike! I don't know why you antagonised him!

Michael: Mom, we were nothing alike! Everything I did antagonised him. Being alive antagonised him. Everything I did was a reason for him to slap me around.
