FaceBook, MySpace Fail in Japan - Blogging Booms August 3rd, 2008

If you are interested in the Japanese market, take five minutes to learn about the culture. Please. You might realize that what works in America, the UK or Australia doesn’t always translate well in foreign markets.

Japanese culture is very security conscious, and platforms such as social networking sites have failed to recognize that when crossing the line into international appeal. Japan has not been conducive to either MySpace or FaceBook (both HUGE attractions in the US), relying instead on the homegrown Mixi.

On the other hand, Japanese love blogs, so you could probably benefit from a blog run by a knowledgeable local to help promote your site.

Lesson to be learned? Don’t launch in the Japanese market unless you are willing to commit and you have an excellent understanding of how the cultural dynamic should impact your marketing technique.

Obviously FaceBook and MySpace didn’t.
