The practice of raking in the dough through serial registration of domains and collection of AdSense click-throughs took a beating as Google has changed their practices regarding pay-per-click advertising.
Last year they instituted a rule stating that domains must be open for at least six days before qualifying for AdSense for Domains, and the abuse of this product fell by 42% year for year.
Another form of brand abuse consists of stuffing sites with popular keywords to induce traffic, then switching out the content. A prime example was a ‘travel site’ which worked its way up the rankings using SEO only to deliberately have its content switched for adult industry ads and links once the desired traffic volume was reached.
Beware when looking for travel deals online for another reason as well; online voucher auctions are a scam, since vouchers are almost never transferable. They will take your money and run and you will be left with an unusable voucher.
Not all spam and scams get caught in the Google filter, but a little common sense can help. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is, and don’t hesitate to report spam or scams.
